What is the difference between PCOS and PCOD?

PCOS and PCOD are conditions that affect a majority of the women population. It refers to a condition affecting women's reproductive organs and menstrual cycle. However, several conventional medicines are available to cure and treat PCOS and PCOD conditions; ayurveda is the best cure for your PCOS and PCOD.

Many people get confused between PCOD and PCOS. But what exactly is PCOS or PCOD? Are they different or the same? This question might have struck many. So let's clarify it here in this Blog. Here I have suggested some differences between PCOS and PCOD.

Read the Blog to know more.

What is PCOD?

PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is a condition in which the ovaries produce premature or impartial eggs in large numbers that become cysts in the ovaries.

In this case, they segregate so much of male hormones that cause several health issues like infertility, irregular menstrual cycle, hair loss, abnormal weight gain, and more.

However, specific lifestyle changes and diets can prevent and correct these. With this, several associated symptoms can result in weight gain, excessive hair growth, thinning hair, and difficulty getting pregnant. Mostly women with PCOD also face issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and type-2 diabetes.

What is PCOS?

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a metabolic disorder that affects women of all reproductive years. PCOS is a serious health condition that requires proper medical assistance and surgical treatment with more severe consequences. It enhances several male hormones, leading to uneven body hair development, difficulty getting pregnant, and more.

In short, both are interchangeably different terms to define the same health condition. The exact cause of PCOS/ PCOD is unknown, but it is related to insulin resistance and hormonal changes in the body.

However, these conditions can be managed through exercise, a healthy diet, weight loss, medications such as birth control pills, metformin, and fertility treatment for those trying to conceive.

What is the difference between PCOS and PCOD?

Both PCOS and PCOD are more or less similar but have certain distinct features that you might need to know;

In PCOD, the ovaries start releasing immature ovaries that can lead to hormonal imbalances and swollen ovaries condition. On the other hand, in the case of PCOS, the endocrine issues cause the ovaries to produce excess androgens that prevent the eggs from becoming a cyst.

However, PCOD has not considered a disease; you can easily overcome it with specific diet and physical activity modifications. On the other hand, PCOS is a metabolic disorder that is a problem of concern among them.

PCOD has more patients overall globally, whereas, in the case of PCOS, they have a limited and fewer number of patients.

PCOS occurs in an earlier stage of life and shows a wide variety of symptoms like excessive facial and other body parts hair growth, certain conditions caused due to metabolic disturbances like excessive weight gain, etc.

Women with PCOD do not suffer from miscarriages or infertility. On the other hand, women with PCOS have a higher chance of miscarriages and the prevalence of infertility, which might cause difficulty for them to conceive.

People with PCOS do not ovulate regularly and correctly, which causes and disturbs the process of ovulation in them, which disrupts the reproduction cycle and makes it difficult to conceive.

What are the diet and lifestyle changes recommended for PCOD?

Since PCOD can be cured with specific lifestyle changes and diet modifications, you can overcome it easily. Here are a few of them, which I have listed below.

  • Try to opt for food that is rich in nutrition content. Better select whole grains foods like oats, brown rice, and quinoa. See to it that you consume many legumes like pulses, nuts, seeds, and raw fruits.
  • Protein intake is another best remedy for treating your health. By adding a sufficient amount of protein to your diet, you can help keep your weight under control. Protein also helps to fuel your body with appropriate energy and strength in your body. However, at a minimum, as an adult, you should consume at least 0.8 gms of protein to your body per kg, which means if your weight is 50 kg, 0.8 x 50 = 4o gms of protein every day.
  • Try to add green and healthy vegetables to your diet. In most of the studies, it is seen that women suffer from Vitamin-B deficiency; hence by opting for a fresh vegetables and fruits diet, you can avoid this deficiency to a great extent. However, you can opt for vegetables like kale and spinach, which are rich in Vitamin B. Adding them to your diet can help you to meet the Vitamin B deficiency. And some fruits like raspberries, and blueberries, blackberries are in your diet.
  • Apart from all these diets, everything would be in vain without proper physical activity or exercise. Along with all these diets, try to follow the exercise schedule that can help you to overcome the health condition Easily.

Hence, you can make a few diet and lifestyle changes to help your health condition greatly.
